User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050317 Firefox/1.0.2 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050317 Firefox/1.0.2 One of the very few annoyances with Firefox is that, when I open a new browser (or launch the first one), it does not put the cursor in the URL bar (assuming that the URL bar is enabled). How many users actually know that they can do this by pressing Ctrl+L? This problem results in lots of wasted mouse movements, which amount to poor ergonomics. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: As described above. Actual Results: No cursor anywhere. Expected Results: Put the cursor, by default, in the URL bar (assuming that it's visible). At least, default to the URL bar but have a preference setting that allows the user to opt for the cursor in the search bar instead.
WORKSFORME, and has been for a long time. Where is focus ending up for you?
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050716 Firefox/1.0.6 using Firefox's default home page ( http://www.google.com/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official ) Actually, the cursor DOES start off in the google search textentry area, for me.
Focus defaults focus to the URL bar if your homepage is about:blank, and the page otherwise. That seems reasonable to me.
Comment #3 seems to describe a quite sensible standpoint: The user has the choice (in setting the home page) whether he wants start at a certain "portal" or wishes to define a location on a case-by-case basis. The focus follows this choice in a natural way. [equals current behaviour of e.g. Firefox 1.5.0.1 ID:2006011112] Since there have been no controversial opinions for half a year and to motivate them if someone really sees a point: INVALID.
