Sounds as if IE is treating .dmg files as .xls files... open the Terminal and
paste (as one line):

curl -O
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.0.2/mac/en-US/Firefox%201.0.2.dmg

then:
hdid Firefox%201.0.2.dmg
James, you can try what riscky said. Open Terminal which is located in
Applications/Utilites

Or if you have Safari installed try downloading with that.
It could be that the mirror you were downloading from did not send the correct
content-type.
