After many months of trouble free operation I too (this problem was already
reported by another user) am having nightmare sized problem with Thunderbird
mail delivery hanging up for minutes on end while its "Building Suymmary Files"
with much HDD acty. This happens every time I try to open mail, either in a
current session or after having had shut the computer down.

Reproducible: Always

1.Open Thunderbird
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Experience long delay for email to download while "Building Summary File"

Expected Results:
Download email "rat now" like it used to do for months on end!
Related to/duplicate of bug 289369?
I've seen similar bug reports, but none with my build: v1.0.6 (20050716).
Steps to reproduce:
(With active DLS connection)
1. Launch Thunderbird. (no message are in the preview pane and nothing is
slected in the folder list)
2. Select INBOX
3. Status bar reads "Building Summary file for Inbox..." After a while - aprox
2-3 minues) the messages appear.
4. Thunderbird functions normally.

I have ~14,000+ emails in the in box. According to the message count in the
lower right corner.
This CONTINUES to be consistent problem. It may be tied in with the fact that it shows FAR more messages in the folder than there are. Compaction and the other suggestions ddo NOT work. I have heard the same problem from a half dozen other erstwhile users.

further, even when the summary file is completed, one frequently cannot open, move or delete messages.

Are you going to fix this bug or do I go back to (ugh) Outlook?
If we could reproduce it, we'd fix it. Have you tried deleting your Inbox.msf?
