Tabbed browsing is great feature that eases browsing multiple website or pages
without cluttering up your taskbar. However enabling "a new tab in the most
recent window" tab-browsing option prevents installing of saved extensions.

Note that this only happens when Firefox is already running. If Firefox is not
running, double-clicking on the XPI prompts the user for installation.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start Firefox and enable the "a new tab in the most recent window" option via
the Tools->Options->Advanced->Tabbed Browsing->"Open Links from other
applications in" menus.

2. Download and save a Firefox extension (, ex.
http://downloads.mozdev.org/livehttpheaders/livehttpheaders.xpi
) to your harddrive. This can be done by right-clicking on most XPI's link and
selecting "Save Link As..."

3. Once the extension has been saved, use Windows explorer to navigate to that
directory and double-click on the extension.
Actual Results:
Firefox will open a new "blank" tab but will not prompt the user to install the
extension.

Expected Results:
Firefox should prompt the user to install the extension without opening a new tab.

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.

While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a

(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.
