And when i close Windows (XP SP2) the process hangs (can't be closed by Windows automatically) and i get the 'End programm' Windows-dialog. I didn't have this problem with previous versions of Firefox. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go browsing some websites. 2. Close Firefox 3. Go to the windows Task Manager, view process list .. and see if Firefox is still running.

Confirmed on Win XP PRO SP1, running Firefox 1.0.3. Reinstallin FF with a new profile does not solve this problem.
Confirmed on Firefox 1.0.3 running on Windows XP Pro SP2 I also tried rebooting the PC and reinstalling Fx1.0.3 but it still occurs most of the time.

Confirmed on Windows XP Home SP2 with Firefox 1.0.4 but this process only takes up to 20 megs of RAM. I cannot open another instance of firefox without killing this processs.

I am experiencing this same issue. I am running Firefox v1.01 on a Windows XP Home Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519: Service Pack 2) Pentium 4 2.40GHz with 768 MB RAM I am using Outlook Express as my mail client. I can not pinpoint any specific action that causes this to occur, but it happens often enough to lead me to believe it is a bug with the application and not a problem with my system. I have been a computer technician for 20 years (Senior Helpdesk Technician for 14 years). I am teaching myself Visual Basic.net Please let me know if there is anything I can do towards finding a cause/solution to this problem. I am trying to find a common denominator still, but not having any luck.

After i removed the Java Runtime environment the problem did not happen anymore (untill now). The process closes. I'm going to reinstall Java and see what happens.

Reïnstalling the Java Runtime stuff (after having removed it first) seemed to have fixed the issue for me !

After a few 'clean' days .. this bug is back. I thought it had something to do with the Java RE .. it can still be .. But nevertheless the problem is still there and annoying me.

Do you have any extensions installed? Also upgrading to 1.0.4 might be a good idea.

(In reply to comment #8) > Do you have any extensions installed? Also upgrading to 1.0.4 might be a good idea. I have no extensions installed. Running on Windows XP Pro SP2 (latest security patches). And i have Firefox 1.0.4 I've also tried to reinstall Firefox after having deleted the whole profile and all other stuff. I will try this again soon .. but i doubt it helps. If there is a way how i can debug this .. let me know.

Likely a dupe of bug 275783 although insufficient information given to be sure.

If Java related problem(JRE,Applet etc.), see Bug 172129, in addition to bug 275783. Same issue?

Looks a lot like bug 275783 indeed .. But after i close Firefox .. the process stays alive BUT I CAN open Firefox again after that. I do not have to kill the process first to open Firefox again. But when i close Windows .. i HAVE to kill the process manually (the infamous 'End now' dialog box). But i think the problem has to do with the JRE .. but i'm not sure (and don't have the programmers skills to discover it. )

I uninstalled v1.0.4, deleted all of the registry entries, and re-installed v1.0.1. I also reinstalled Java. The problem still occurs, but FAR less frequently than it used to. Strangely, it seems to come and go...

I've been running firefox 1.0.6 and I have noticed that this bug comes into play reliably if the built-in download manager has been opened. Even if it is closed before all other windows in that process were closed the firefox process remains running. My suggestion would be to terminate whenever both of these conditions are met: 1) there are no open windows attached to the process. 2) there is nothing downloading. A way to implement this would be whenever a window is destroyed and whenever a download completes. Sorry if I seem pushy. I just thought if i was to post a bug/comment I better have a half-cooked plan on how to correct it.
