I just go an "malformed file error when I started Firefox. I just installed a lot og extension and now I have no idea which extension has the malformed file. please include name of extension or where this error was
This is a catch 22 since the install.rdf is where the extension's name is stored / provided by the extension's author. Also, this should only ever be seen by extension authors that create a malformed install.rdf except possibly in the instance where an extension's author does not try to install the extension they created before distributing it. For me this is wontfix for these reasons.

*** Bug 283466 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
This should only happen to extension authors nowadays per comment #2. Also, it isn't possible to get the extension name from an install.rdf that is malformed since it is malformed. Resolving -> wontfix.

couldn't we just write the xpi file name? Since it's now possible to install xpi's by added a xpi file to the users extensions directory I really like to see proper error messages.

There are cases where the file is downloaded into the temp / chrome directory where it will use a unique name that won't provide anything useful and will turn into a new bug to fix that. We are trying to come up with better text in bug 308916 and it would be appropriate to review the text in that bug. As for this bug and adding the extension name this can't be done for the reasons I cited.
