Hi,

would be nice to be able to have custom buttons in the firefox and 
thunderbird toolbars which pass the current web page (or e-mail) to 
arbitrary programs for customizable functions. 

I guess this could simply be implemented as an extension, but
I am not familiar with writing Mozilla extensions.

This is not gonna happen in the standard install. You can try asking at the
mozillazine Firefox extension forum for something like this.
