Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
Build Identifier: Firefox/1.0.0,1.0.1,1.0.2

When update spawns the installer for the updated version, it says it must
remove pervious version(s) of Firefox. After installing the update all
previous versions are still seen under Add/Remove Programs.

Reproducible: Didn't try
User-agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.7)
Gecko/20050414 Firefox/1.0.3

I just upgraded to 1.0.3 yesterday the same way you just described and it
removed all entried in Add/Remove programs for me just fine.
