User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050225 Firefox/1.0.1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050225 Firefox/1.0.1 Software update doesn't ever finish. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Click the little red Software Update arrow in the upper right. 2. It finds the one available update (1.0.3); click "install now" 3. Wait, and wait and wait. Actual Results: After clicking "install now", the window popped up saying "Firefox Update", "Install Updates" and the little spiraling icon saying "Now downloading and installing updates..." and stays there. The window can be closed with the X, but if you don't close it it just stays there and goes no further. Expected Results: Installed 1.0.3. Running XP-Pro/SP2 with up-to-date WindowsUpdate patching. The problem is persistent whether I'm logged in as Administrator or as a regular user. It doesn't, if running it overnight is any indication, time out or otherwise change state - it just spins that icon until you close the window. This is true for all of machines at my workplace, but because we've deployed a standard image, it may be an artefact of our setup. I will provide any additional information I can, but I'm not sure what to be looking for.

WFM Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.7) Gecko/20050414 Firefox/1.0.3 Maybe the Update Server was busy. Mike Hoye, can you please try again ?

I assure you that this is an ongoing problem. I should have reported it weeks ago; I have tried several times today, with no success. On my home machine (which is not using the office image) it works fine - that step-three window progresses to a smoothly scrolling green bar that shows me it's downloading the update, and everything proceeds as you'd expect. However, on my office machines this doesn't happen. It just spins in place, after it says "Now downloading and installing updates" but before it says specifically what it's supposed to be installing, and doing it.

Not sure if I should submit a new bug or attach it to this one (which seems to be a close match) .... I have 1.0.3 installed and after pressing the Update button it gets 90% of the way through checking for updates and then stops - I have left this for over an hour and tried on several occasions. The only effect seems to be the update button has changed from red to blue. One possible proplem - there is a extension that has been installed but is waiting for a FireFox restart.

Same for me too: the update window stays open with no visible activity. Environment: Win 98 SE in a LAN behind a DSL-router (german Telekom net). No proxies. The problem is the same since FireFox 1.0 - no activity in the update window, no net activity (I can see the activity LED on my Netgear bridge).

I had this problem too until I ticked the 'Allow websites to install software' flag in the Web Features section of options. It was unchecked because I had read the advisory about the security holes which lead to 1.0.4, and followed the stopgap instructions to disable XPI installation. This may be coincidental. I haven't retested with a clean install and the flag unticked to see if the problem is still reproducable.

I see this bug as well on the trunk builds of firefox. If websites are not allowed to install software, then firefox will still check for updates and let you choose to download and install updates. When it starts to try to do this, it displays "Now downloading and installing updates..." and the throbber throbs, but there is no other activity. All dialog buttons are disabled so closing the window is the only option. Either firefox should still be able to download updated when websites aren't allowed to install software (presumably the updates already bypass the whitelist at least anyway), or at some point in the update process firefox should tell you it can't install the updates unless you enable the option (and possibly let you enable the option for the update session?) Added a test extension. This extension only works on trunk builds, but whenever firefox tries to find an update for the extension it will find one. Steps to reproduce bug: 1. Install this test extension. 2. Restart firefox. 3. Disable "Allow websites to install software" in options. 4. Tell firefox to check for updates for the test extension. 5. Allow firefox to attempt to download and install the update.

I had an extension that was causing the Firefox automatic updater to hang (a GOOGLE extension no less[google suggest 0.3 beta]). It would be prudent to have the updater better inform the user as to what it is doing, such as saying 'Checking for updates to XXX extension...' so that if there is some sort of problem with an extension, the user would know which one. I had to resort to removing extensions 1 by 1 to figure out which particular extension was halting the operation. Thanks!

Happens to me intermittently on 1.0.x. I'm using 1.5b1 right now, and I haven't tried it other than for extension update checks in 1.5, which seems to work. I am a Mac OS X user.

Closing out bugs in the old style updater, which are superseded by the new system in 1.5.
