The Thunderbird program appears to work normally in most respects. But when the
In Box is selected, the Total number (at the bottom of screen) gradually
continues to rise even though no new mail is indicated. Total has shown to be
as much as 10,000 when there was actually about 700. As the indicated number is
rising, some mail will not open. Clicking on another folder than back to Inbox
will reset the total number to the correct figure. But then it will gradually
creep up again. I could not find this problem listed in Bugzilla.
AVG professional shows no virus on the machine. Spybot also finds no new troubles.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. As described. This has been happening for a couple of weeks.
2.
3.

I'm running the latest version of Thunderbird. When I checked, there were no
updates.

This is a duplicate of Bug 288762.
I had this problem and a few others (see below) for a few months. Reported it
here, but got no response. I fixed it myself, but I知 not sure exactly how.

I ran Registry First Aid (around $30, I think) to keep my registry clean. A very
useful program. I recommend it to all.

Then I ran AdAware, which is free. I had run this before, and again it helped me
clean up some bad stuff on C:. This time, however, I had a close look at the log
file it produced. I decided to remove some startup programs, namely:

realsched
mmdiag
mim

I did this by renaming, e.g., mim.exe to mim.xxe. Verified by inspecting Task
Manager. Removing these had no effect. Then I had another look at the AdAware
log and decided to remove mdm. The other thing AdAware did was remove several
cookies installed by doubleclick, which is a Data Miner.

The TBird problem cleared up immediately.

Just to make sure, I then reinstalled mdm, to see if the problem would return.
It did not return!! So mdm, which is a very unneeded program, is still in
there, but TBird is running beautifully. Maybe it was doubleclick, I don't know.

I don't understand this, of course, but you might give it a look.

The problems that were resolved were:

1) The Total count in the lower right corner is now correct.
2) The program now checks for incoming email every 10 minutes.
3) The program now plays an audio announcement when it downloads new incoming email.

Problem not resolved: A memory leak in TBird. As reported by Task Manager, the
memory requirement slowly grows without bound.

Obviously there's more experimenting to do, but I am very happy to have restored
TBird to its former usefulness.

I'd be interested in hearing directly of your experience, both positive and
negative.
I have a problem which is very near.
Version 1.0.6 (20050716)
See also 305902 ?
I see no mail in the box "inbox"
Although the counters in the right down corner are : unread = 0 total = 5
I remember that i seemed to loose some mails while opening them
I just see today 4 of them in choosing "connaissances" (address book ? sorry I do not know the term in english) instead of "all" in the box "See"
The senders are in my address book
I put these 4 mails in other folders.
Now counters are : unread = 0, total = 1
Yes, I have the same bug.
I have done a screenshot here : http://chti-tux.info/bug-tb.png
My Thunderbird is in French, but the bug is here ...
QA Contact: front-end
Reporter, does the issue still occur with the latest supported 2.0.0.x / Shredder trunk nightlies?

(1.5.0.x is now end-of-life and the latest supported Thunderbird version 2 is 2.0.0.16)
