User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.7) Gecko/20050414 Firefox/1.0.3 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.7) Gecko/20050414 Firefox/1.0.3 If I open Thunderbird and it prompts to compact mailboxes and I click yes, it will start compacting while downloading messages. If any of these messages are to be filtered from or to a mailbox that is currently being compacted, the filtering will fail and the message(s) will be lost. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1.You must have many messages in the in box 2.activate filters so that incoming messages will be filtered to other mailboxes 3.open Thunderbird and when it prompts whether to compact or not, answer yes. If there are incoming messages that will be filtered from the inbox to other boxes while the compaction is going on, those messages will be lost. Actual Results: as above Expected Results: it should have postponed compaction until downloading and filtering were complete. compaction is destructive and should only be allowed when there are no other activities going on. While compaction is in progress, no other activities should be allowed.

I agree that compacting at startup is a bad idea, but when I do this, the messages simply aren't filtered; they get left in the inbox, not lost.

This has happened on several occasions but I can't say it happens every time. I'm not sure whether it is the combination of message to a particular filter or not but compaction at the same time and at startup is a recipe for trouble. I admit I have a lot of messages in the in box (who doesn't?) and it bugs me often to compact mailboxes which I normally let it do. I just wish it wouldn't do it first thing when Thunderbird is launched which seems to be when the problem occurs. Thanks, Tony
