Details
(Whiteboard: [fixed 2.0?])
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.7) Gecko/20050414 Firefox/1.0.3 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.7) Gecko/20050414 Firefox/1.0.3 When attempting to copy messages from Local Folders to an IMAP folder, Tbird will often act as if it is working (the throbber throbs and the status bar cycles), however there will be no network activity and the messages are not copied. This problem occurs when using the right-click Copy to: or Move to: functionality, as well as drag-and-drop. It seems to occur randomly, apparently independent of the message (a message on which Tbird fails will later copy or move correctly). This problem will occur when moving messages individually or in groups; we have never been able to move groups larger than 10 messages successfully. No mail has been lost to this problem; I have not seen this problem occur when moving messages between folders in the same IMAP account and have been unable to test if it occurs between different IMAP accounts. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Copy or move messages from an IMAP account to a folder in Local Folders 2. Copy or move messages from Local Folders to any IMAP account folder Actual Results: On 60% or more of attempts to copy or move messages to an IMAP folder, Tbird will apparently lock itself into a "working" cycle (i.e. the throbber throbs and the status bar cycles) but nothing will be accomplished and there will be little to no network traffic. This problem does not always occur with every message, and may not occur with messages it has previously occurred on. The only way to break Tbird of this cycle is to close and reopen it. Expected Results: Tbird should have copied or moved the message(s) to the desired folder under the IMAP account. No crash reports generated; no themes or extensions installed; nothing out of the ordinary in the system setup (fairly standard Windows XP SP2 installation, all updates and patches installed).

can you try a trunk thunderbird build? Also, what IMAP server are you using, and do you have SSL turned on?
Tried the 4/21 trunk build, got the same results. SSL is not on (server does not support it). Server is Netscape Messaging Server 3.62. I now believe this is an incompatibility between Thunderbird and this server; I was able to successfully and flawlessly copy more than 500 messages from Local Folders to a remote IMAP server running different software. Copying the same batch to the Netscape server would fail before the 20th message was copied, even after multiple attempts.
Maybe to provide additional feedback: IMAP Server: Courier-Imap SMTP Server: Postfix (The server where I never get errors is a Communigate Pro.)
For me, this error occurs most often when I reply or forward messages. When I compose a new message and send it, it often works.

If I might promote my own bug, I believe this is another expression of: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=290424

I observe this behavior as well on both Linux and Windows T-Bird build (using Windows XP, T-birtd, version 1.0.2 (20050317)). I run into the problem most frequently when deleting. Often it seems the best workaround is to kill and restart Thunderbird. Sometimes it will eventually fix itself. This is a very irksome bug to run into when I clean up my folders and re-organize about 3x/year since it doubles or triples the time to do that. Unfortunately, I do not know what server exactly (can't find a command or option to divulge that to me), but it is on a Sun capability returning IMAP4rav1 2003.338 and all mail access is via SSL. It does look like 290424 is a dup of this, but this bug has more votes and more activity - so maybe 290424 should be marked dup of this one?
Ditto! I'm using MailEnable Enterprise and Professional for an imap/smtp server. 1 out of 5 times it will succeed when copying a small number of emails. It also may sometimes leave an email on the server when it fails with no headers/body. Outlook Express has no trouble copying the same emails from local machine -> imap.

I'm pretty sure this bug is fixed now, and has been for quite a while. Have people tested on a post-1.5 version of Thunderbird?
I haven't seen this bug in a long, long time. I'm always using the latest version of Thunderbird which is distributed through its update-function. Last time I saw this, my DSL was down. So this "could" be pronounced fixed.
