Registerfly.com's SMTP server requires 3DES for SMTP but still uses port 25, and mail can be sent using outlook express. It's impossible to send mail using Thunderbird. Outlook Express has a security tab that allows you to specify 3DES. This is required to log in. I tried using SSL on both the default port and port 25, along with TLS. None of these worked. I'll attach a screenshot of the Security tab for outlook express.

The error I got was, " Sending of message failed: The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server <server name> failed. The server may be unavailable..."

its pretty much no longer applicable, 15 years is long period for encryption and how it changed since then. I'm pretty sure 3des is no longer even negotiated anymore in current builds

and

So suspect the need for this protocol ended with the demise of registerfly.com

THere is also
Bug 1167857 - Thunderbird should use AES for S/MIME based on correspondent's key sizes, for compliance with RFC 5751

Version 91 has all new smtp backend code. If you can still reproduce this issue, please file a new bug report https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=MailNews%20Core&component=Networking%3A%20SMTP
