are you using a gtk1 or gtk2 build? I see this behavior with gtk2, but not gtk1. (see about:buildconfig to see which one if you're not sure)

--enable-default-toolkit=gtk2 Acroread works for me on Fedora Core 1 with mozilla 1.6, it also works with firefox. There is a fedora core 3 bug at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=155020
