This is obviously not the experience most people have... anything about your particular setup that might be unique? Is something launching firefox (or the default browser) at startup? (next start check the task manager for firefox before you try to launch it manually) Do you have Java installed? Certain interactions with Java are known to produce "zombie" firefox instances, but that's usually firefox not going away completely at shutdown, not a startup issue. Not a security exploit, clearing confidential flag.

JAVA 2 Platform Standard Edition v1.5.0(build 1.5.0_01_b08) is ok I reinstalled Firefox 1,0,3 a couple of times, now runnning ok in safe mode, so I assume an extension is bad. I just have to isolate which one. Spoofstick in pixelzilla does not run, but that's reported elsewhere. In safe mode everything (tabbed browsing etc. is perfect...) thanks for everything!!

same occurs here with lastest patches to W2k and Forefox 1.0.6 with lots of extensions for testing. process starts OK, first time. When Firefox is closed process does not stop. Must go to task manager to kill process before restarting Firefox. dRb sends

1.0.3/1.0.6 is now a little old. WFM Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.2pre) Gecko/20070218 BonEcho/2.0.0.2pre and as well on Firefox 2.0.0.2 rc5 Resolving this as wfm. Please retest with a latest Build/Release. If Firefox won`t start please try to start Firefox in Safe Mode (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode) If Firefox.exe is always open - see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox.exe_always_open
