I tried 1.0.3 and the 20050430 nightly on OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and both exhibit
character spacing problems when rendering bold fonts on seemingly any page.
I'll attach a screen shot. I only notice this on OS X 10.4, not 10.3.9.

Reproducible: Always

I have this problem too...
After much hacking around, I got Firefox to compile under Tiger, on the thought
that some SDK modification might fix the text rendering problem. No such luck,
a native Tiger build still exhibits the problem. Also note that text in
<TEXTAREA> boxes is *really* messed up...
confirming, based on comments...

Changed summary based on new understanding of the bug.

Also, I found Verdana exhibits the bug as well, so it's not just Arial as is
suggested in my test case.
Summary: Bold text character spacing corrupted on OS X 10.4 (Tiger) → Character spacing corrupted on inline style changes in OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Flags: blocking1.8b2? → blocking1.8b2-
A workaround for this behavior is posted under
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=288047 and I've verified it works
for me too. Check it out.
