On Wiki websites (such as http://en.wikipedia.org), it would be nice to have an
"edit this page" button on the Mozilla Firefox toolbar, which would do the same
thing as the Wiki's own "Edit this page" link.

Why would this only need to work on Wiki-pages ?
For a general-purpose edit-button, see bug 172817.

Two questions:
1) Would that send the modified code to the *server*, or only edit the local copy?
2) Wiki sites (at least those running WikiMedia) have a special Wiki markup that
gets translated to HTML on rendering. I would want to edit the original Wiki
markup, not the resulting HTML.

That would be something for an extension (if you want a special wiki solution).
