Thunderbird takes an excessively long time to fully launch

When I launch Thunderbird the Mail window opens in good time however retieving
all my mail, old downloaded messages as well as new ones off the Mail Server
takes 1 minute and 45 seconds to complete.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Launch Thunderbird

Expected Results:
I expect that the full message listing should be completed in less than 15
seconds. When I first installed Thunderbird, that was the norm.
I have been using Mozilla and Thunderbird for a couple of months. When I
downloaded it, it was installed over Netscape 7 and Netscape Communicator
respectively. This was advantageous because the installations picked up all the
settings that I had in those programs.
