I frequently leave tbird [currently version 1.0+ (20050428)] up and running for long, long periods of time. It is rock solid! Anyway, a couple days ago I noticed that I wasn't getting any new rss articles, and I was sure that I should. Hitting "get mail" didn't help. When I quit and restarted, I got a bunch. My account settings are to check for new articles every 45 minutes and to check for new articles at startup.

could this have been caused by switching between versions of tbird? is there a magic file(s) I should delete from my disk to "reset" the state?

got the same problem here... after restarting Thunderbird, I get all the new RSS articles, then it works for a while and stops working at one point... hitting getting messages(either on the RSS folder or in the toolbar) doesn't do it anymore and I need to restart Thunderbird. btw: I'm using OS X over here and Thunderbird 1.5

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem, but it's astonishing that 1.5 was released with this major bug. At least I now know that restarting thunderbird is a temporary fix, but this obviously need to be solved ASAP. The old RSS functionality was great... what happened?

Considering I upgraded to 1.5 just so that I could put multiple feeds into one folder and use the new "retention policy", I'm a tad disappointed that this bug prevents me using RSS feeds at all in 1.5. And unlike for others, restarting doesn't seem to help at all in my case. I'm quite amazed this bug is still in NEW state - and here I was thinking I was pretty clever to conservatively wait a bit before upgrading. Are there really only this few people that use this feature?

Well, surely I should have tested this first. It seems that deleting all the RSS feed subscriptions and re-subscribing to them solves the problem. You can then move your existing articles to the new folder(s). So this looks like an upgrade issue, I believe I was using 1.0.4 before upgrading.
I am having this exact problem and deleting my feeds and re-adding them did not solve it. I'm using Thunderbird version 1.5 (20051201). I have my feeds set to check once every 15 minutes, but at least once a day I have to close and restart Thunderbird to get any new news items (clicking Get Mail doesn't work either).

I am having this problem as well. Restarting the application works for me as well, and it appears to have started on upgrade. Willing to provide more info as requested.

I've been having the same problem for a while now as well with RSS feeds. This was also happening back on 1.0.7 (the first version of Thunderbird I started using). Right now I'm using 1.5 (20051201) on WinXP. Gets new items and then stops working for some reason. It keeps checking for email though. I have it set to check the RSS feeds every 15 minutes, email every 10 minutes.

Another data point: I once set the "compact folders when it will save..." to a low-ish number, and that seemed to reduce the time it took to get into the state where Thunderbird stopped refreshing the feeds.

I see this as well - clean install of TB 1.5 on XP SP2 (FF1.07 also installed). All default settings in place, 12 different RSS feeds in 12 folders all stop indicating new articles after about 48 hours. After exiting TB and reopening it, the articles appear in the folders with an earlier timestamp (not the timestamp of the startup time, but something during the time period when the articles stopped displaying).

I've got it too. Version 1.5.0.2, on XP. The scary thing is for the past week, even restarting Thunderbird hasn't fixed it. I haven't made any configuration changes I'm aware of.

More information on my problem - I brought up the javascript console and I saw an error in parsing feeditems.rdf, line 1. I couldn't load feeditems.rdf in a text editor. Just garbage characters. So I backed up my feeds, shut down Thunderbird, deleted feeditems.rdf and restarted. The RSS feeds came in instantly. A new feeditems.rdf was created and was well-formed XML. So my problem is fixed. I don't know if this information helps toward figuring out the original problem.

I think this bug was fixed in 1.5.0.2. Taken from the Rumbling Edge changelog, this seems to match what I was experiencing anyway (and I no longer have this problem): Fixed: 312008 - RSS feeds stop loading after connection errors So, I would say that that bug was a duplicate of this one, just nobody realized it. :)

Concured - I saw that resolution when I installed 1.5.0.2 and have not this problem since.

I've just checked - I am using version 1.5.0.2 (20060308). Thanks for letting me know about the duplicate.

The original cause of the inability to receive RSS articles is not mentioned, and will likely not be known in this instance. There are numerous other bugs on being unable to receive articles with more specifics. Other major ones are bug 301605 and bug 389369 (which I may dupe to one another), reflecting feeditems.rdf and feeds.rdf corruption, respectively, complete with workarounds (deleting one/both of the files) and diagnostic discoverability (check your error console). This bug itself will be marked as RESO INCO.
