Mozilla crashed, shut down and when restarted none of the customizations were
still in effect and all Bookmarks were lost.  I cannot identify what caused the
crash.  It was as if I had just reinstalled it from scratch.

Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce
See if you can delete the parent.lock and then use firefox -p to switch profiles
back.

If that works, say so and (if you can) close the bug.

There were no locks in place.  No problems since the crash.  

This was a new installation with few bookmarks which were easily reproduced so
not much harm done but someone with lots of bookmarks would have been very unhappy.
Did only FF crash or did you have a system crash? For the latter see bug 193749
as dupecatcher.
Only FF crashed.  The system has been stable although I do get error messages. 
no way to reproduce and no talkback..
The loss of data is covered  by various other bugs
