User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.7) Gecko/20050414 Firefox/1.0.3 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.7) Gecko/20050414 Firefox/1.0.3 When you go to Tools and then Options>Advanced and press the Check Now under Software Update, the tool recognizes that there are updates available, however, the program just won't download and install updates. It just keeps trying and trying for 20 or more minutes and nothing happens. Is there a security setting in XP that is stopping the udpate process or is this a bug? I've tried this on several systems running XP Pro SP1 and 2 and the same result occurs. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open FireFox 2. Go to Tools menu 3. Click Options... 4. Click on Advanced in the Options menu 5. Scroll down to Software Update 6. Click Check Now button 7. Wait for the window that tells you which updates are available 8. Click Install Now button Actual Results: The window changes as if it is trying to update and install the software but it never does. It just sits there for 20 minutes or more trying to update but cannot. Expected Results: Update the version and apply patches when Software Update is activated.
oddly enough, i upgraded firefox 1.0 to 1.0.4 with this method earlier tonight on another machine, and it worked fine. and yes, it was xp pro sp2
(In reply to comment #1) > oddly enough, i upgraded firefox 1.0 to 1.0.4 with this method earlier tonight > on another machine, and it worked fine. and yes, it was xp pro sp2 I guess I should change this bug to intermittent then. However, I can't get it to work with any XP Pro, SP1 machine (I've tried several different machines) and I tried it on about 5 machines running SP2 but it never worked for me.
do you have any kind of firewalls on any of these machines or between them and the net?
This is a duplicate of Bug #288054. At present, the firefox update is unable to work when the "Allow web sites to install software" is disabled. That option is found via Tools | Options, then looking in the "Web Features" section.
Adria: do you have "Allow web sites to install software" turned on? (This is on the "Web Features" pane of the preference dialog.) If it is off and turning it back on makes this feature work then it does sound like bug 288054 (thanks, danielc!). Another possibility: are you using an account which is allowed to modify the Firefox install directory? If Firefox was originally installed by an Administrator account ("Owner" on WinXP) and you're trying to update from a "limited" account then the upgrade will not be able to work. It should give you some intelligible error message though. If this is the case then it's probably a dupe of bug 262653 (duped to the confusingly titled bug 262558)
