I'm assuming that the update mechanism in FF thinks that there is something to
be done, but apparently not.  Unfortunately there isn't any indicator of what FF
thinks needs to be updated, so it's hard to further diagnose this.

Did the icon go away after you got the "Firefox was not able to find any
available updates" message?

If yes, then this is a dupe of bug 268560

What extensions do you have installed?

At the time I only had adblock IE View and ForecastFox installed.  Now (behavior
continues) I have more.
