Are you using a firewall? You most likely need to configure your firewall to allow Firefox access to the internet.

If you do not have a firewall, can you get to http://start.mozilla.org using another browser (e.g. using IE)? If you can't get to the site using IE (or other), then this is a network (and not firefox) problem.

I also have this problem, only since I upgraded to the latest version. I have checked my firewall and it is allowing access. Have tried to get access via ie to http://start.mozilla.org and this does not work. I am not on a network, only ADSL from home.

Open a command prompt (Start->Run...->"cmd.exe"->OK) and type "ping start.mozilla.org" to see whether your computer can reach it.

I (Lorraine Coller) get this message too. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Unable to start Firefox. Other steps to reproduce. Click the "Home" Icon, the "Getting Started" Icon, Select File, New Window Option

I have this problem since 2.0.0.4, and perhaps occasionally before, and it has been getting worse. It has also occurred on an installation I did for a friend on their machine, both Win XP. But several details are missing, or perhaps are behaving differently on mine: 1. It never happens when clicking on the Firefox icon itself, but only when clicking on desktop shortcuts. The name in the "Not found" message is the target URL of that shortcut. 2. The error box in question is a Windows error, not a Firefox error. It seems to be saying that Firefox did not load fast enough, or failed to acknowledge the request fast enough, and Windows has gotten upset and reported a failure. 3. The error is, in fact, incorrect, as there is no failure. Firefox continues to load, and does correctly reach the target URL without any error. The false Windows error box implies that Fx is not making Win aware that Fx has the situation under control. 4. I had seen this error intermittently before, but only when Fx had a problem loading, or was taking an unusually long time to load, e.g., after an ungraceful shutdown, when it stops to ask whether to restore the old session, or load a new session. Windows would interpret this delay as a "URL not found" error. 5. The error never happens if Fx is already loaded. It instantly transfers to the active copy and loads the URL. This also suggests a timing problem may be the cause. 6. In 2.0.0.5, the error happens every time I click on a shortcut if Fx must load fresh (is not already loaded). There are no longer any cases where it can load fast enough to avoid the error box.
