In ff 1.0.4/moz 1.7.8 and other browsers it is rendered as white.

That is odd. I can reproduce on both mozilla and firefox trunk with clean profiles.
My distribution is Debian sarge.

Knoppix: only when scrolling (I will attach testcase for that)
Windows: as reported no
Windows build under wine: yes

This seems to be very system dependant.

This should be self-explanatory; you get a black colour where you should have
GIF transparency.

Though note that if you need a different image you're probably seeing a
different bug.
