My mail comes in, and it is sorted in to a number of folders. Some of these
folders, as email arrives, do note that fact by having the folder name turn
BOLD, update the count field, and change the folder icon.

Others do NOT. When I 'visit' one of these folders, THEN the name turns bold,
and the count field is updated.

NOTE - even hitting the "get messages" button does not cause a state change
here. Only actually visiting the folder causes the change.
Are you using IMAP or POP3? That's a pretty important distinction that would be
nice to have been included in the filing... What build ID? If you're using
IMAP, try changing:

the value of (in about:config) mail.check_all_imap_folders_for_new from 'false'
to 'true'.

Note, however, that this isn't really supported.

Also see bug 186894 and bug 250738.
Do you use filters to move msg to other folders? See e.g. Bug 107206.
The server I use is an IMAP server and the build I used is 2005/05/12.
Yes, I have filters to move msgs to other folders.

The bug seems to gone after I set the mail.check_all_imap_folders_for_new to
true. Since it is not really supported, I'm not sure if this setting really fix
the bug.
Possible dupe of bug #289208.
