User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; it-IT; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; it-IT; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4

Settings in bookmarks manager relative to sorting features (under View menu)
only works in its contest: ie. outside the bookmarks manager, everywhere there
is a list of the bookmarks (in the sidebar, the Bookmarks menu, the bookmarks
personal toolbar) actually they always remain unsorted (in the way one arrange
them by hand)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open Bookmarks menu--> bookmarks manager
2.Sort the bookmarks in some way other than unsorted (ie View menu-->entry 4..10)
3.Look how bookmarks are ordered, now you can close bookmarks manager and look
at the order of bookmarks either in Bookmarks menu, or bookmarks sidebar, or
bookmarks' folder toolbar.
Actual Results:
Indeed the bookmarks are unsorted as before

Expected Results:
Bookmarks would have been sorted the way one selected in bookmarks manager
This work for me in Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2)
Gecko/20050524 Firefox/1.0+ . Could you please test this in a nightly release
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/ . Reopen if
it still does not work.

Yes I tried it again on and on:
I keep getting the same nonfunctionality, tried the above steps on the Deer Park
1.0+ nightly build

I've just created a brand new profile and started browser with it: I have to
reconfirm once more the same behaviour: I was beginning to think it was caused
by some extension mess, now I have got a try of it not being so (w/ new profile
no existing extensions nor themes)...

1 precisation: the sorting setting I apply to the bookmarks in the manager,
actually remains from session to session, in the sense that if e.g. I applied a
order by Last Visit Ascending, then close bookmark manager, exit firefox, and
relaunch it, reopen bookmark manager, I would find it again set as I did. Note:
this occurs even from session to session w/ different profile!
<It clearly shows up that in my very case the settings stored for the bookmark
manager sort feature aren't read anyway by main bookmark function: or at least
to be precise, the only thing that is correspondent between the 2, is the
unsorted way in which I drag&drop items manually (that only setting do last).

*There is not really any one who could confirm the behaviour I noticed?*
> this occurs even from session to session w/ different profile!
I beg your pardon, this one is not true at all, I wrongly checked it! Every
profile keeps its bookmark manager's settings.

I am not a programmer and have no idea how to fix this, I am merely reporting a
problem. I have this same problem: Apple iBook, using Mac OS 10.2.4 and Firefox
release 1.0.5

Has anyone found a solution to this yet? The fact that the folders are not sorted A-Z in the Bookmarks menu makes the whole thing unmanageable as far as I'm concerned.

It would be nice if the functionality of Sort Bookmarks 0.7.0.1 as described in http://www.oregontechsupport.com/support/2006/11/sorting_bookmarks_in_firefox.html and found in http://www.oregontechsupport.com/xpi/sort_bookmarks-0.7.0.1-fx.xpi were available in standard firefox. This would fix these bookmark sorting problems.
This bug should have the OS changed to ALL, the Version to 2.0 Branch, and the Status to Confirmed because it has been verified under Linux, OS X 10.4, 10.3, NetBSD, Solaris for both the 1.5 branch and the 2.0 branch.

Also see bug #363294 and bug #363299.
I can reproduce this. The newly sorted order stays the same in the bookmarks manager after closing and re-opening it, but the order of bookmarks in the bookmarks menu never changes as a result of the 'View' menu item selection in the bookmarks manager.

As bug 280509 says, it's not "sorting", it's "view by". That means it's not rearranging the bookmarks, but just showing you a different view of them.
