Can you create a SMTP log as described under http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#smtp?

I am having the same problem. I using Windows XP. Can send in Outlook express, but not in Thunderbird 1.06. Get a "Sending of Message Error." I am using the same SMTP settings in both Outlook Express and Thunderbird.

Very likely a software firewall/antivirus issue. Disable them to test. If that doesn't help, comment 2 and 4 already tells you what to do.
