I was talking to someone on IRC yesterday who was having problems with his junk mail not being purged after the 1 day he had set in preferences. Today he came back and said his problem was in fact the 5 minute purge delay. If he closes thunderbird before it gets a chance to kick in, he gets the idea that thunderbird is somehow not respecting his setting. Now I wonder whether performing a purge on shutdown is feasible. (Otherwise, perhaps you could reduce the delay for the first purge.)
