STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1) rm -r ~/.firefox; rm -r ~/.mozilla/firefox
2) Download any nightly Firefox Linux .tar.gz from 2005-05-11-11 or later.
3) Untar it in /tmp
4) /tmp/firefox/firefox

EXPECTED RESULTS: Firefox window appers

ACTUAL RESULTS:

(Gecko:9162): Gdk-WARNING **: gdkdrawable-x11.c:787 drawable is not a pixmap or
window
/tmp/firefox/run-mozilla.sh: line 423: 9162 Segmentation fault (core
dumped) "$prog" ${1+"$@"}

Sometimes a window with a title of "Wizard title" will be left behind when this
happens.

Sometimes I get talkback to come up. Incident sent in through that:

http://talkback-public.mozilla.org/talkback/fastfind.jsp?search=2&type=iid&id=6308143

(ccing pavlov based on that stack).

NOTES: This does NOT occur with builds from 2005-05-10-11 or earlier. I can't
reproduce this problem with seamonkey builds (GTK1 or GTK2). I can't reproduce
the problem with my local debug Firefox builds either.

Bonsai query for the regression range (plus a few hours in each direction):

http://bonsai.mozilla.org/cvsquery.cgi?treeid=default&module=all&branch=HEAD&branchtype=match&dir=&file=&filetype=match&who=&whotype=match&sortby=Date&hours=2&date=explicit&mindate=2005-05-10+08%3A00%3A00&maxdate=2005-05-11+14%3A00%3A00&cvsroot=%2Fcvsroot

I see no obvious checkins in that range that would cause this. Was there some
sort of build config change for nightlies?
Ah, the little window I was seeing seems to be a very broken talkback failing to
start. In a current tip build I do get talkback, and the stack is the same:
http://talkback-public.mozilla.org/talkback/fastfind.jsp?search=2&type=iid&id=6313689
I'm assuming not everyone sees this (else there would have been reports long
before), but still I might not be the only one who runs into this with the
official builds....
Flags: blocking-aviary1.1?
I get the same crash with the installer build...

In case this matters, I'm running XFree86 4.3.0 as the X server here.
Summary: Firefox Linux tarball nightlies starting May 11 crash on startup → Firefox Linux nightlies starting May 11 crash on startup
I just tried again with a current trunk firefox build. No more GTK errors, but
I still get "Exit 1" and no firefox startup. I get the same result when running
on a FC3 system as the client (with the X servers still on my own computer).

This is rather blocking me using Firefox for layout work, since I can't create a
nightly archive for regression testing if nightlies don't run....

So what's special about the mozilla.org builds and the way they're built? And
more importantly, what changed about it on May 11?
I get
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2005-07-03-05-trunk/firefox-1.0+.en-US.linux-i686.tar.gz
to run by copying in a res/hiddenWindow.html, which is not included in the archive.
If I do that I can get Firefox on the FC3 box to run. Running on my other box
(RH8 with updated X, Xft, etc) starts giving the GTK errors described earlier in
this bug if I do that. Have we just dropped support for some OS or library
versions without changing our minimal requirements or something?
Flags: blocking-aviary1.1? → blocking1.8b4?
Whiteboard: needs info - minimum system requirements changed?
OK, this started working again somehow... no idea how... The July 5 and later
builds start up.

I think we need more information on this to decide if we're going to block on
it. Who can figure out what changed to break this?
Asa, the two possibilities are either a change in our code or a change in the
way we're compiling the nightlies (change in build environment, compile options,
etc). At the moment, my bets are on the latter, since we're crashing in code
that didn't change on the day when this bug appeared. This is supported by the
fact that my own builds work fine. So whoever would know how we build the
Firefox nightlies... chase is cc'ed, so is bryner. Is there anyone else?
My own status report for that week says:

  New build systems
  - prometheus moved into place as Firefox trunk Linux build system, still need
troubleshooting to enable building with profiled optimizations

We tested the builds on various Linux platforms before we switched over to
prometheus for our nightly builds. The only major change that we knew of at the
time was that the produced builds were not optimized (where ocean's were).

What's your system, bz? RH8? I thought Asa's tests of ocean's builds from
about that time showed we didn't even run on RH8 with those files. If 5/10's
builds are from ocean and bz can run them then we didn't uncover something our
testing probably should have.

Care to provide a Firefox Tinderbox URL from 5/10 and another from 5/11?
> What's your system, bz? RH8?

RH8, yes. With most updates, and with XFree 4.3 installed (via the RH8 version
of the SRPM).

> Care to provide a Firefox Tinderbox URL from 5/10 and another from 5/11?

I'm not sure I understand the question, assuming it was directed at me.

> > Care to provide a Firefox Tinderbox URL from 5/10 and another from 5/11?

> I'm not sure I understand the question, assuming it was directed at me.

One can view old data using Tinderbox's "Show previous 24 hours" link. If you
went back to 5/10 and 5/11 you would see which build system did the Linux
release build that day. The shortest path is to cut and paste the "previous 24
hours" link into your location bar and replace the time_t value with suitable
values that represent 5/10 5pm and 5/11 5pm.
> which build system did the Linux release build that day.

This is the part I'm not following. You just want me to look for the tinderbox
that finished building at the right time? Or something less error-prone?
Oh, I see. There's only one GTK2 linux Firefox tbox...
5/10 --
http://tinderbox.mozilla.org/showbuilds.cgi?tree=Firefox&hours=24&maxdate=1115780088&legend=0

5/11 --
http://tinderbox.mozilla.org/showbuilds.cgi?tree=Firefox&hours=24&maxdate=1115860088&legend=0

It looks like prometheus did indeed come online sometime on 5/10 after the
morning builds were spun... Note that there is no GTK2 Firefox tbox on 5/10
before prometheus appears, but that could just be because a tinderbox that
dropped off isn't being shown.
And I just noticed we actually label builds as "release" now... I didn't
realize we were doing that; now comment 11 and comment 13 make a great deal more
sense. ;)

Asa, Marcia, or Tracy? Do any of you have a VMware installation that has
vanilla RH8 where ocean's build works and prometheus's doesn't? Can we confirm
that minimum system requirements changed here?

If so, the fix for this bug is to change our minimum system requirements doc for
1.5 and onward.
I don't have RH8 but I can install it tomorrow and give this a test.
I cannot get Firefox nightly builds to start up on stock Red Hat 8 even before
May 11. We fail to start with the message that GLIBC_2.3.2 is not found and
required for libnspr4.so.

So as far as I can tell, we don't support stock Red Hat 8 at all and our minimum
system requirements should be bumpted to RH9 and above.
> I cannot get Firefox nightly builds to start up on stock Red Hat 8

With updates, or the "initially shipped before we fixed things up" version? I'm
assuming the latter, based on what followed.

> We fail to start with the message that GLIBC_2.3.2

glibc 2.3.2 is an update for RH8. See
http://updates.redhat.com/8.0/en/os/i386/glibc-2.3.2-4.80.8.i386.rpm for example.

Hi,
What are you taklking about> I did not change anything (or at least not that I
know of) I just added my email address to the cc list.
Sorry for the bugspam.
Just wanted to let you know that I did not change anything.(except for added
myself to the cc list)
Needs testing by our QA team to find out what the minimum version of our Linux
builds is currently. This shouldn't block the branch.

Hi,
I have not gotten then top run on Rehat linux 8.0 However They do run on redhat 9.0.
Maybe Glibc 2.3.2?
Bryan, see comment 21. In general, please please please read the bug before
commenting, ok?
Do we have any other reports of this? It seems to me that we need to understand
why we're breaking and if appropriate update our system requirements to indicate
that we're no longer supporting RH8.

/cb
we need to update our release notes to say that our minimum install is a fully
updated RH8. We no longer run on stock RH8. See BZ's comment #21 for why.

> we need to update our release notes to say that our minimum install is a fully

Asa, it's not clear that we run on a fully updated RH8 any longer. IIRC you
tested a vanilla RH8, not one with an updated glibc. bz filed this bug because
a RH8+updated glibc system is what he uses and where he could run nightlies
prior to May 11 he can not run them from May 11 or later.

Please ignore my comment if you've already verified that we do with the latest
nightlies.

I get a similar error, Deer Park crashes for me on the first run (both windows and mac) after having used 1.5beta 2 on those machines.

same thing or should I submit another bug?

Most likely you're seeing bug 311685 -> bug 311332.
I am using Firefox 1.0.7 on RH8 system without any problems but when I try to run version 1.5 RC1 or Beta2, it crashes with the following error.

I did the foll. Untar the rc1 tar.gz and run ./firefox. I even tried the safe mode but the error remains same.

(Gecko:6672): Gdk-WARNING **: gdkdrawable-x11.c:764 drawable is not a pixmap or window
./run-mozilla.sh: line 424:  6672 Segmentation fault      (core dumped) "$prog" ${1+"$@"}
On SuSE 9.3, it will run if I am root, but I get the crash running as a user.

At first, I got no feedback running. But then after I did
chown -R jar:users .mozilla
I get talkback every time I start Firefox, Thunderbird, or Mozilla.

So there must be a permissions problem. Is it possible that the profile maker is creating things with the wrong permissions? Or is there a bed permission in the executable directory somewhere?
(In reply to comment #34)
2/10 crashes reported by you mention start up. if you're focussed on the message listed in comment 0 (Gdk-warning), then you'll need to get gdk symbols, gdb, and probably a mozilla build w/ symbols (build it from cvs - head or 18branch). your object creation crashes are actually quite interesting but really don't belong here (sorry for dumping them here).

I am still unable to run the released 1.5.0.1 version on one of my machines except as root.
Are nightlies ok now or are there still problems?
If anyone is still having problems, please specify your OS version and the firefox build ID.
This problem very much remains on RH8, though I suspect at this point it has more to do with pango versions and the like. We've dropped support for a whole bunch of OS versions on trunk, as I understand (everything before Fedora Core 3 or so?).
It was impossible for me about 3 weeks ago on SuSE 9.3. Because of that I upgraded to SUSE 10.1 and all the mozilla products work again.
would someone please pick through comment 35 and select a crash they care about and add it to the summary? if they don't, they risk me resolving this bug as a duplicate of any bug matching any of the stacks therein.
This bug as originally filed has been effectively wontfixed -- we dropped support for that OS.
