When changing the DPI setting in the Deer Park prefs dialog, the setting is
either ignored, partially ignored, or entirely broken -- various breakage states
I got into include rendering things with 3" fonts, as well as rendering 1px
fonts in all XUL dialogs (when I tried setting a custom dpi of 110).
Is this still happening? If so, should the UI just be removed if it's totally
broken?
I'm thinking we should just remove it. Just re-tested with a nightly from a few
days ago (branch), and on windows, it does basically nothing -- switching it to
72dpi from the default 96dpi causes no change, and causes the dropdown to have
nothing selected next time I go to it. I'll try linux a bit later, but I don't
expect much improvement.
Right, seems pretty broken here too, no time to fix, don't think it ever really
worked.

Patch tomorrow.

It certainly worked fine in GTK1 builds at some point. Whatever broke, we
should probably fix it in the new cairo world... Do we have a bug on that? If
not, we should file one.
The cairo work plus Eli's units patch should make dpi work well.

I'd like to add a comment on severity -- this is rightly recorded as a major bug, because it renders some websites unreadable if you are working on a laptop. I need vision correction to read news.bbc.co.uk as FF renders it; I can read IE without vision correction because it defaults to a more readable dpi. Many folks encountering this problem would not be willing to use FF instead of IE. That makes this a high priority problem. I see that the priority field is not filled in; I don't know exactly how that gets used, but it seems to me that this is should be marked highest priority.
The DPI pref does work on GTK -- but it should only affect fonts on Web pages specified in absolute units (pt, in, cm, mm). I agree the UI should probably be removed; it's broken in various ways, and most users shouldn't have any need to change the pref from the default (which should be -1, but isn't).
Fixed by bug 326329 and bug 327406
