Check the properties of the shortcut used to run firefox. There should be a compatibility tab. Make sure none of the check boxes under display settings are checked. This is probably an invalid bug. This has been encountered before on Mozillazine: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=269142
I switched to the shortcut for Firefox and under properties found there was a box checked for 256 colors. I removed the checkmark and the problem disappeared. Duh !
