ATM, the setting for "automatically add outgoing mail addresses" (I'm ad-libbing
this, as I only have the German version installed here) is "Personal Address
Book". For me (and I know not only for me) this means that my Personal Address
Book will be polluted with every Tom, Dick and Webmaster I send a short mail to
in no time. I would think that the "Collected Addresses" thing exists for just
this purpose. So, please, change this, and absolve me and, I imagine, numerous
others from having to change this for every Thunderbird install we do.

Reproducible: Always
Version: unspecified → 1.0
Go ahead and mark this as Serverity: enhancement, since it is an enhancement
request.
we're happy with the default. You're free to change it.

That's it? No explanation, just a "we like it, **** you"?
Sorry, I've had a long discussion about this before in another bug, which this
would be a dup of, and I didn't want to repeat myself. To summarize briefly,
many years ago, we decided that it's simpler for most users to have a single
address book, and our philosophy is that the default behaviour should be the
simple one. Power users would be more likely to want multiple address books, and
luckily, are the same users for whom changing a default is easy.

Believe it or not, just having a "Collected Address Book" in the UI is confusing
for users - I know because people have come up to me and asked me what it is...
OK, that makes more sense. I can accept that. Do you have a link around for that
bug? Because I thought I had searched rather thoroughly...
bug 267878 - the discussion there is a bit twisted, because at first I didn't
understand the issue was about the default setting, unlike your bug, where it
was right there in the summary :-)
