Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4

After upgrading from ALSA 1.0.8 to ALSA 1.0.9rc2 (and ALSA 1.0.9b after that),
the new mail notification sound emits an audible "click" (or "pop" or "crackle")
right at the start of the sound. This occurs both when new mail actually
arrives, and when pressing the "Preview" button in the Preferences -> Mail &
Newsgroups -> Notifications dialog.

When using "esdplay" to send the WAV file to the same ESD daemon that Mozilla
spawned, there is no "click", and the sound plays fine. Using "aplay" (which
entirely bypasses ESD) also plays the sound file fine.

This occurs identically in both Mozilla Mail 1.7.8 and Thunderbird 1.0.2.

Also, as a sidenote, it would be nice to allow users to set their sound playing
tool. I would rather stop using ESD and use "aplay" instead.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade to Linux kernel 2.6.12 (or at least, ALSA 1.0.9)
2. Open the sound notifications dialog (Preferences -> Mail & Newsgroups ->
Notifications)
3. Press the "Preview" button after selecting a sound.

Actual Results:
An audible "pop" can be heard at the beginning of the sound.

Expected Results:
The sound should have played without any pop/click at the beginning.
Severity: normal → minor
