Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.7) Gecko/20050414 Firefox/1.0.3
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.7) Gecko/20050414 Firefox/1.0.3

Firefox's pop-up alert stating that a software update is available looks
remarkably like a Microsoft alert. This is confusing.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Firefox 1.0.3
2. Click the "Tools", "Options", "Advanced" menus.
3. Under "Software Udpate", uncheck "Firefox" and "My Extensions and Themes",
and then click "OK".
4. Click the "Tools", "Options", "Advanced" menus.
5. Under "Software Udpate", check "Firefox" and "My Extensions and Themes", and
then click "OK".
6. Watch the task bar icon area (defaults to the lower right corner of the screen).

Actual Results:
A little pop-up appears in the lower right stating: "New Updates Available,
Click Here to View", with a little puzzle-piece icon that looks remarkably like
the icon Microsoft used for Office for a long time.

Expected Results:
The pop-up should have the Firefox icon, not an Office-like puzzle piece.
Additionally, the "New Updates Available" text should say "New Firefox Updates
Available".

The current pop-up is confusing. If I don't catch the pop-up in time to click
the "Click Here to View" link, I think that Office needs updating. I go to
Office Update, and nothing needs updating.

Lest you think that's unlikely to happen, consider that I've seen that sneaky
little pop-up sucker about a dozen times (and blamed Office each time), and only
today was able to catch it in time to click the link and discover that it's
Firefox that needs to update!

My apologies for not reproducing this on the current build. I used an old build
because I don't know how to provide steps to reproduce this on the current build
 - I need to use an old version so that the "New Updates Available" test will
succeed. I did search your bug database and could find no similar bug; my
apologies if I goofed and this is a duplicate.

Last, please consider that while your puzzle-piece icon is not exactly like the
one trademarked by Microsoft, they may have a legal case against you
nonetheless. And, if this was a deliberate attempt to tweak MS, please consider
that we users who are confused by this are simply not amused. Therefore, while
the severity of a similar "strange icon" bug might be "Trivial", I'm reporting
this as "Normal" - you really should fix this in the next release.
