Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050628 Firefox/1.0.4
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050628 Firefox/1.0.4

After opening and closing many tabs ( At least 50 -60 ) Firefox hangs with 100%
CPU usage after 10 min gets to 60 % for a few seconds and up to 96,6 again.
Tried it with WinXP Pro (SP2 ENG) on 2,6 Ghz P4 with 768 MB ram
the same system running Linux 2.6.12 KDE 3.4.1 same Problem after about 256 MB
RAM usage ( more than 100 MB RAM Free)

the surfing was opening a Page ( like www.daemlich.net and other sites with
funny pictures and videos ) Using Tabs for opening the Pages to download th
pictures and videos.

Im connected to the net behind a Proxy ( set using cache in about:config to
false and max consistend proxy connections to 7)

When i close the tabs the memoryusage does not go down...
so is there anychance to fix it?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.open at least 30 Tabs
2.save pictures or videos out of every tab
3.close the tabs after each saving
4.open new tabs...

Actual Results:
After opening ennough tabs to cause 256 mb memory usage firefox hangs
duringgggggg the close of a tab no memory is freed.
The data is lost and firefox may not be recovered

Expected Results:
Freeing memory everytime a tab is closed.
firefox has over 100 MB memoryusage with a blank page after closing everything.

Windows / KDE report firefox died
After a lot of sharp looking ;)
I noticed, that it is not the opening of tab, which produces more RAM usage
it is the saving. Even when i save the same file a second time ( overwrite it)
Memory jumps.
hope that will help
A new (easier way) to reproduce should be:
1. Open a Site
2. Right click a picture of about 160 kb
3. choose Save Image As...
4. Press Ok
5. ... over ang over again ... ( you can overwrite the same picture, shows the
same effect)

using Linux you should see by using top, that everytime you save a picture
memory usage increases.
THIS IS NOT WORKING BY SAVING A NON IMAGE FILE.
Duplicate of bug 251380?
may be, but also a higher amount of small pictures works...
i will mark as dublicate.
did not find the dublicate because at first i was searching for many tabs...
