User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050223 Firefox/1.0.1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050223 Firefox/1.0.1 Java plugin 1.5 installed and works correctly under Konqueror browser. Firefox documentation says to install symlink in "Firefox plugins directory", which does not seem to exist. Created symlink in .mozilla directory, a subdirectory (gwg58h2f.default) which seems to contain firefox preferences, and in two new subdirectories called "plugins" which I created under the .mozilla and this preferences directory. Plugin library still not recognised or used. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Run any webpage requiring Java plugin. 2. 3. Actual Results: Displays plugin required window. Expected Results: Used Java Plugin.

First : try to upgrade to firefox 1.04 if possible. Two : look here, you should find more infos. http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html#Java Closing as INVALID as it is not a firefox bug ?

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060909 Firefox/1.5.0.7 Sorry guys, this is most definitely broken. Like the original poster I'm using SuSe 9.3 and the problem is 100% reproducible. I have explicitly followed all recommendations to address this problem. None of them work. As you can see I'm using a relatively current version of FireFox. The original poster deserved to get attention for this bug. If it fails to get any after this report I will open bug reports until it does! Thank you.

Argh. Installation problem. Further investigation revealed I was operating on the wrong plugins directory. Now that I identified the correct one everything is ok (about:plugins correctly shows java along with the other plugins). My apologies for the false alarm.

Reporter, do you still see this problem with the latest Firefox 2 and the latest Java? If not, can you please close this bug as WORKSFORME. Thanks!

Now under Ubuntu Dapper Drake, kept up to date, Firefox and Java as distributed. Now running on AMD64, so Ubuntu for AMD64, but running both 32 bit (to get Flash video) and 64 bit (normally). I still get the same problem. Go to web page requiring Java, says I need Java plugin. Install it, nothing happens. When I try to create a symlink, report is "File exists". about:plugins does not report Java.

I tried this on a clean Ubuntu 7.04 install. Downloading the file at http://www.java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp and following the instructions for a manual install at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml#selfextracting and following the "Enable and Configure" instructions just below that, specifically for Mozilla 1.4 or later, I had no issues. This works for me. Michael, following those instructions, but for 64-bit Linux, are you sure you can still reproduce? If so, I'm guessing this is an issue with the Java plug-in and not with Firefox.
