It appears that Thunderbird can't "fix" the errors of the sender's email client. I'm NOT blocking remote images, & I have selected "view attachments inline". Here's an example of what I've found: <IMG id=3DMA1.1118700739 height=3D418 src=3D"cid:26E0C555-CC8D-40C1-AC36-03C8124F7092" width=3D480 border=3D0 DATASIZE=3D"51272"> has been broken into this set of lines: <IMG id=3DMA1.1118700739 heig= ht=3D418 src=3D"cid:26E0C555-CC8D-40C1-AC36-03C8124F7092" width=3D480 bor= der=3D0 DATASIZE=3D"51272"> If this bug has already been reported, I appologize. If there is a fix that I can apply myself, please let me know! Reproducible: Always Actual Results: Broken inline images with attachments. Expected Results: View the images inline with no attachments. The sender I'm receiving these emails from is using Incredimail on Windows XP. However, the problem may be caused by the email client of a previous sender of the fowarded message. The problem also occurs with the Mozzilla suite email client.

Can this bug be confirmed? Will it be fixed in the next version?
I've seen complaints about this on MozillaZine Forum. For instance, http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=342333
I am the one that started the thread http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=342333 From my experience, it appears as though this only happens with images and emoticons that originate from Incredimail. One of the emails that I had sent, that had images in it, then was replied to by an Incredimail user, had the images that I had displayed inline, but any that they had from Incredimail we displayed as attachments.
It does appear the problem comes from Incredimail users, & TB can't read the images properly. I hope this issue is resolved in the next version of Thunderbird!
can you attach an e-mail that has this problem? It could simply be incorrectly formatted so that there's no way for us to display the image.
It happens with ANY email containing inline pictures that was sent via Incredimail. In my description above, I included what might be the problem. (In reply to comment #5) > can you attach an e-mail that has this problem? It could simply be incorrectly > formatted so that there's no way for us to display the image. >
I performed a simple test. I took an email that I had received from an IncrediMail user that was displaying inline images as attachments and forwarded the email to my work. At work we use Novell GroupWise. The email displayed properly in my GroupWise Email. Inline Pictures display as inline and not as attachments. Also, Incredimail emails display correctly in Outlook and Outlook Express.
As an addendum to this... it doesn't appear to be just with emails from Incredimail. I have a friend that has forwarded a couple of emails to me. He uses Yahoo email, and once again the images are attachments and not inline. But from another email program the email displays correctly.
Attached file Sample Message
This is a sample e-mail in which the embedded images are received as attachments.
I am having the same problem except that it happens regardless of the sender's client or whether or not the mail was forwarded. One example is attached where the sender has used Outlook and has images/links embedded in his signature. The links work but the inages are shown as attachments at the bottom of the message instead of inline. The message displays correctly in Outook, OE and Incredimail i.e. with inline images. I have "View Attachments Inline" checked and read messages in Original HTML.
Sounds to be DUP of Bug 206278(View/"Display Attachments Inline" enabled case). See Bug 320571 for View/"Display Attachments Inline" is disabled case. See also Bug 203570. Problem of Bug 206278 is already fixed when trunk by latest patch of Bug 203570, although Bug 203570 is still open because is not resolved completely yet. I believe problem of Bug 320571 is also already resolved in trunk by patch of Bug 203570. But the patch was not landed on Thunderbird 1.5.0.0. Question: Will symptom of problem vary according to following option change? (1) Vew/Message Body As : "Original HTML" or "Simple HTML" or "Plain Text". (2) View/Display Attachments Inline : Enabled or Disabled.

I can't say anything about the Incredimail or Yahoo messages, as no sample as been provided, but the message provided by Paul Bijster is in fact invalid: the images stored in the message have been given the MIME type "application/octet-stream" which means, essentially, "type unknown". If the message is tweaked to change the type to "image/jpeg" (for the first two) and "image/gif", the message displays with the images inline.
I have had this problem as well. TB can received forwarded images inline but cannot receive initial images inline, they are stripped and turned into an attachment. All settings are checked properly including the "Dsiplay attachments inline" option. I have 2 gmail accounts that I use. One I use in Incredimail and the other in TB. When I sent messages from incredimail, the stationary and the inline image both show up as attachments. If I were to send the same image from TB to Incredimail, I would be able to see the image inline. If I then forward it back to my TB, I can then view the inline image as a forward. Sending an initial inline image to TB will strip it and make it an attached yet if it is fowarded to TB it is viewable. I have also tried using this with Outlook Express and web-based emails just to confirm that it is not only an incredimail thing. Why is TB blocking initial inline attachments? I have version 1.5.0.7 and I am using Windows XP.

Attachment #243397 - Attachment mime type: image/jpeg → text/plain
Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="homerdrool.jpg" that's the problem - the content type isn't getting set correctly by Outlook.
This happens no matter where the email comes from. I have sent it from incredimail, outlook, and web based emails. If you can let me know how to do change these settings in Outlook Express, I can try testing it.
Also to add to my last comment, like I said before, you can forward a message with an inline image and it can be viewed in TB, you just can't view an original email with an inline image in TB.
I have encountered this bug as well. I don't believe the sender's mail client has anything to do with it. For the 'broken' mails I receive, it is enough to add Content-Disposition: inline; filename="image001.jpg" to the header of the image. But then the image shows up and the text is gone... So it's not the complete solution but it may give somebody a hint what the problem is. For the homerdrool example message I needed to change more in the msg-source. First I rewrote the html, I changed content-type to 7-bit in stead of iso-8859-1 and I changed a bunch of other things. The thing that got it working in the end was replacing the part Content-Type: multipart/related; type="multipart/alternative"; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0006_01C6F788.0100F250" by Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0006_01C6F788.0100F250" But doing only that change on the original homerdrool message doesn't work... I really hope someone can use this info, I will investigate it further to find the exact problem.
I'd like to confirm this bug and express my strong hope that it be finally resolved if at all feasible. Literally millions of mails originating from Outlook, Outlook Express and other mail clients having embedded inline and/or attached Pictures are affected. Resolving the bug should be easy since in the Mozillazine Forums the reasons for this bug have already been discovered, see here: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=2855897#2855897 Thanks for resolving this *considerably* irritating bug as early as possible, Cheers David.P

Has there been any progress in fixing this "bug"? I'd sure like to see this problem either addressed by the Thunderbird developers, or an Add-on created by someone to fix/workaround it. Anyone??? Thanks, Tracy
I wish there was. I don't think that anyone really cares about it anymore. It is really sad because I love the ease of Thunderbird and it is the most amazing program to back up, just one simple file saves everything in your email. It is really a shame that nothing is being done about it. It seems that this kind of thing always seems to happen when a new version is released. No matter what product Mozilla has, whether it is Thunderbird or Firefox, and I am sure that the newer applications are going to be affected as well. There has been a problem with Firefox viewing videos on websites ever since they upgraded to 2.0.0.0. Mozilla really needs to work on fixing these issues with their products. You would think that by now, these would have been resolved. Oh well, I guess we will have to wait and see what goes on or move onto some other type of mail program. Just my two cents, Brian
just to add this problem still exists. I installed yesterday 2.0.0.6 and run in his problem too. It didn't exist with my former thunderbird version. So it must be a bug. Is somebody working on a fix?
WADA, this simple configuration, listed as "(1)" in your post is all that was needed to fix all of these described problems, in my thunderbird client 2.0.0.9 Thank you very much. Don't know how it got that way, but I'm sure I probably changed it at some point. Corn Fed
I agree with the posts of WADA and Cornfed. I have TB 2.0.0.9 (2007 1031). When I checked I found View, Message Body As, was set to Plain Text. When I changed it to Original HTML or Plain HTML the missing images were shown in line in the text. However, I have had this setting set to Plain Text for sometime and have had no trouble getting images to display in line until recently. I don't know just when the problem started. Friends who are also using this same version of TB have been attaching photos to their e-mails to me and they have been displaying here in line all OK with Plain Text selected. However, when certain e-mails have been forwarded to me from those same people the attached images are missing from the text and are shown as icons at the bottom of the message. They all have Forward Attachments In Line selected in their TB.

do you see this in version 3?
