I am on a dialup connection. I have Thunderbird set to check for email every ten
minutes or so. I usually leave my computer on, but occasionally log onto the
network.

Every once in a while what happens is that I log onto the network, and before I
get to Thunderbird to have it check mail, it is already doing so in the
background. There is no way from the Thunderbird application to see that it is
downloading email, except to notice the number of unread messages climb in the
folder list. But if I have a large email then I will not see anything until it
is completely downloaded. If it has been days since I last logged onto the
network, and Thunderbird starts downloading emails in the background, then I
have no idea how long it will take and how much time it will tie up the phone line.

What I would like to see is Thunderbird show in the bottom message bar the same
kind of information while downloading in the background as when I explicitly
click on the "Get Mail" button.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
QA Contact: front-end
Assignee: mscott → nobody
What about the messages on the status bar
Connecting with pop.example.net
Downloading message 12 of 45
45 messages downloaded
etc., and the progress bar?
