Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050716 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050716 This may be a duplicate of bug 228646 or bug 230735, but neither seemed to be updated since 2004 and I haven't noticed this until the 1.7.10 build. For some inexplicable reason, the keyboard periodically stops responding. Arrow keys and Page Up/Down don't move the browser window, ctrl+a won't select text in either the browser window or the address bar (although you can still type in the address bar), ctrl+c won't copy, and so on. The only keys on the keyboard that do not seem to be affected are the backspace key and the enter key. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: Don't know how to reproduce; happens often and intermittently. 1. 2. 3.

I've used basically every build since 1.7.1 without problem. The last one I was using was 1.7.8. I'll check the seamonkey build and let you know (downloading now).

Grr. Can't get the Seamonkey build to run.

with SeaMonkey, try invoking the installer with "-greLocal" or using the .zip build

I'm not entirely sure how to do that on a Windows box. Drop to a DOS shell....?
Comment 6•18 years ago

yes. Just open a command shell with start->run and type 'cmd'

This happens for me as well. I also have used every 1.7.x version (and most versions prior), and this didn't start happening until 1.7.10. It happens on both my home and work computers (home is Windows 2000, work is XP; no extensions installed on the work copy other than Flash and Sun Java plugins). Very frustrating to have basic functionality like this not work -- haven't seen that since the bad old early days of GUI web browsers. I would downgrade to 1.7.8 but am concerned about the security holes.

Dan/Steven: were you seeing this problem in mail, or other parts of the suite? bug 301917 was for similar problems in mail.

The only part of the suite I use on a daily basis is the web browser (erm, Navigator, I see it's still called) -- that's where I'm seeing it. I'm also having problems with copying & pasting intermittently being disabled (not just from the keyboard shortcuts, but from the menus as well), but I don't know if that's a different bug or not (it too started with 1.7.10).

Ditto to what Dan said on all counts. I don't remember if I've seen it do this in Mail, although it may. I've noticed it primarily in the browser. I have discovered, though, that as in the previous similar bug, going over to Mail and typing in the "Search" field usually (if not always) resolves the problem.

I'll try test out the seamonkey build tonight, if I get a chance. Today is the last day of the Bar Exam and I'm moving across the state by the weekend, so I'm not sure I'll be able to get to it, but I'll do my best!

(In reply to comment #9) > I'm also having problems with copying & pasting intermittently being disabled > (not just from the keyboard shortcuts, but from the menus as well), but I don't > know if that's a different bug or not (it too started with 1.7.10). Could be bug 301968. Dan/Steven: Can you please get a branch build from http://mozilla.isc.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/nightly/latest-1.7/ and verify that this issue is fixed by the changes at bug 301917? Both bugs looks very similiar to this bug.

Looks promising so far (thanks!), but since it's an intermittent issue I'll have to use 1.7.10.2005072706 for awhile before I can be confident the bug is gone.

Dan/Steven: can you verify that this is ok in 1.7.11?

Ah, didn't realize 1.7.11 was out -- http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/ still links to 1.7.10. Navigated to http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/ and found it, though. Yes, looks good so far. Again, since the bug was intermittent, will need to live with 1.7.11 for a little while before I can say it definitely appears to be gone, but if you don't hear from me, it hasn't recurred (it never did recur with 1.7.10.2005072706). Thanks again.
