About 3 times a week, when I launch Thunderbird, the program freezes while
"Trash" is "compacted." This takes upwards of half an hour. (I have 40,000
messages in trash. I do not want Mozilla or anyone else to punish me if they
think that is too many.) How can I disable this automated "compact" process?

Reproducible: Always
were you asked if you wanted to compact folders? And did you have deleted
messages in your trash? We don't compact folders w/o asking (though there is an
RFE to do that). Is this IMAP or POP3/local folders?
cant proceed, not enough info and reporter is gone -> INVALID
