The XPI dialog in Firefox counts down in tenths of seconds. This is distracting
and pulls my attention away from checking the dialog text.

I'm trying to remember when and why it changed from seconds to tenths of seconds.
Between ID 2005072510 and ID 2005072521. See also Bug 302136. :)
I changed it to tenths of a second with the blur/focus bug (239411), because my
hyperactive eyes thought the dialog was stalled with the slower counting. I
think that a countdown in half-seconds that used integers instead of seconds
would suit also...
This probably needs to be adjusted by final. Applies to the install dialog as well.

Summary: Security dialog countdown in tenths of seconds is distracting → Install/Security dialog countdown in tenths of seconds is distracting
I find the new dialog highly annoying. Counting down in seconds seemed fine to
me. Did you discover that many other users shared your concern about a
"stalled" appearance?
Assigning to ben for a UI decision, you can reassign back to me for whatever
changes are needed.

requesting 1.8b4 blocking, and removing request for 1.5 since that 1.5 flags are
not being used anymore.

btw this is very distracting and i didnt even read what was going to be
installed because i focused on the timer counting down, then clicked install.
also looks unprofessional but i can't put my finger on why just yet.

This needs to be fixed, yes. This is the equivalent of using a blink tag in UI.

CC'ing Mike Beltzner.
I agree with Jesse about how the tenths of a second ends up drawing too much
focus to the countdown, taking it away from the other information in the box
that they're supposed to be reading instead of pressing "Install". Also, using
tenths of a second makes us look uber-geeky.
Since there are a couple of bugs with the xpinstall dialog I added this fix to
the patch in bug 305694.
