I have tried to switch to Thunderbird but I must return to
Mozilla because Thunderbird 1.0.6 can't communicate with a
LDAP server with which Mozilla 1.7.x works. Mozilla need the
manually change of prefs.js (protocolVersion 2). But
Thunderbird does not work with and w/o this preference.

Reproducible: Always

Yep, but the there described workaround for version 2
does only work in Mozilla not in TB.

I'm surprised that forcing LDAP v2 broke in Thunderbird; I'm not sure what would
have caused that.

The address book did not return any responses when I searched the company LDAP
server, but the autocomplete feature in the compose window still works. 

I've tried TBird 1.5 Beta 1 Windows build on WinXP SP2. It's the same when I
used the later builds.

in Thunderbird 1.5 beta 1 as well?

no, it works in this release. Values set by using edit button in Advance
Preference tab and a restart of Thunderbird was necessary.
