Reporter, the behaviour of plugins improved a lot in the current trunk version (Deer Park alpha 2, an alpha for Firefox 1.5). Even on a very old and slow iBook (300 Mhz), I'm not crashing, and the VR environment is usable. Not fast, but usuable.

No response from reporter in well over a year to comment #1 below, apparently works in 1.5+, if someone finds otherwise, please reopen/leave a comment.
