I've installed Sun's 1.0.5.04-5 64bit java and Deer Park Alpha 2 does not
recognise it. I get the "install plugin" icon on webpages that use Java.
According to searches of Google, there are quite a few people experiencing this
with no known work arounds.

It appears that Sun has not released a 64-bit plugin for Windows and Linux and
maybe even Solaris. I'm a neophyte with Java but it sounds like it isn't possible
to connect Firefox and Java unless there's a plugin.

Are there other Java implementations out there that would do a reasonable job?

The source code for the Plugin is apparently available from Sun in the JRE. I
have a todo list item to pull it and try building it but am pretty busy right now.

Konqueror works great.
