do you have a "search" button on your toolbar? preferences|navigator|toolbar|search what specfic prior version are you referring to?
In 1.7.8 and all previous versions. I did not upgrade to 1.7.9/1.7.10, so I don't know if it was broken in those versions.
And yes, I do have a search button in the toolbar. Hitting return selects previous pages from the history, just not the "Search for" option that appears at the bottom when I enter text into the URL field.
So I reset my search default to Google and it works. I guess installing version 1.7.11 didn't maintain my search engine preference and perhaps that was the problem.
