Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.11) Gecko/20050728

In prior versions, I could enter a term in the URL field, hit the
down arrow to highlight "Search for " option, then hit return key to
initiate the search. Return key no longer works.

Reproducible: Always
do you have a "search" button on your toolbar?
preferences|navigator|toolbar|search

what specfic prior version are you referring to?
In 1.7.8 and all previous versions. I did not upgrade to 1.7.9/1.7.10, so I
don't know if it was broken in those versions.
Version: unspecified → 1.7 Branch
And yes, I do have a search button in the toolbar. Hitting return selects
previous pages from the history, just not the "Search for" option that appears
at the bottom when I enter text into the URL field.
So I reset my search default to Google and it works. I guess installing version
1.7.11 didn't maintain my search engine preference and perhaps that was the problem.
