Build Identifier:

I have a couple of accounts set up: IMAP for reading, SMTP for sending. No
authentication on SMTP. Very often (at least 75% of the time), when I send a
message, it is delivered almost instantly, but then the dialog "Copying message
to Sent folder" stays up for at least 10 minutes. I will eventually get a
message saying that the copy failed, and asking if I'd like to try again.
*Sometimes*, if I say yes, it succeeds. Other times it doesn't, and I have to
just cancel, with the very undesirable result that I do not get a copy of my
sent message in my Sent folder.

I don't have problems manually copying messages between different folders otherwise.

This happens with messages of any size; I have absolutely fine bandwidth.

This is starting to get irritating enough that I may have to stop using
Thunderbird. It seems crazy that the thing should just sit there for 10
minutes, indicating that it is trying to copy the message, which certainly
cannot be true.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Compose a message.
2. Send it.
3. The message gets delivered, but the "Copying message to Sent folder" box
stays up for at least 10 minutes.
4. Eventually a message appears saying the copy failed and suggesting to retry.
Actual Results:
Sometimes the retry works, sometimes not.

Expected Results:
Copy the message to the Sent folder! Don't pretend to be trying for 10 minutes!

What Thunderbird version do you use?
I am using version 1.0.6-1.1.fc4 (20050720)

None of the workarounds I've found actually work. For instance, one suggestion
was to change the location to which sent messages are copied from the built-in
Sent mail radio button selection to a manually-selected Sent folder (second
radio button) in the preferences dialog. No use.

This continues to happen regularly and it is a very serious problem. A quick
Google search turns up many people having the same problem. This sort of thing
can really cause people to abandon the product -- eventually it just doesn't
seem worth the risk if you ever write email that has any value to you whatsoever
(which I do constantly).

I'll be happy to provide any debugging/diagnostic output if requested.
Same problem here with Thunderbird 1.0.6 under Linux. I can't identify when the
bug kicks in, but when it does it takes a restart before outgoing messages are
saved again. It also applies to saving drafts, so sent messages can't be saved
as drafts either.
There have been some recent fixes around several different apparent hangs
when copying messages to the IMAP Sent folder; see in particular bug 287658,
bug 123063, bug 163951.

The fixes for those are in 1.5b1 and branch builds as well as trunk builds.

Noel Bush, feel free to reopen this bug if you are still encountering the symptoms with a current (1.5b2/rc1 or 1.6a1) build.
