work. I tried to setup deerpark to open MIME's with .swf without any luck.
I have the flashplugin 7 installed.

Reproducible: Always

Actual Results:
I am asked to save file or open with a diffent

In that case your browser and the flash file are probably not on the same partition.

this occours for me too. FF no longer plays D'n'D SWF files. I have a feeling this has something do with reinstalling firefox after flash has being installed
This problem appears to occur when a user upgrades from Firefox 1.0.x with Macromedia Flash Player plugin to Firefox 1.5.x, without first uninstalling the plugin.

Specifically, on Firefox 1.0.x with a working Flash Player, Flash (swf) files can be loaded directly in the browser (with the plugin being automatically invoked to play the file), either by following a link to a swf file, or by opening a local swf file in the browser. After upgrading to Firefox 1.5.x, this functionality fails (although Flash files /embedded/ in Web pages still play without problem).

To resolve the problem, uninstall the Flash Player (see ) and reinstall it using any standard method, such as manually or via the plugin service.

This problem occured on Windows ME (and so would appear to affect the whole Windows family) using Macromedia Flash Player version 8 in Firefox 1.5.x.
Omitted link to info on uninstalling the Flash Player: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Macromedia_Flash#Uninstalling_Flash
I tried the proposed solution. After uninstalling Flash, I also had to delete # flashplayer.xpt GetFlash.exe and GetFlash.exe.manifest . I reinstalled Flash, but when trying to open a saved .flv file, I still get the box askinf if I want to open with Firefox or Save.

Windows XP.
In reply to Comment #7, did you try the suggested procedure without deleting the files that you mention?

What version of firefox are you using? (Help -> About Mozilla Firefox)
I am using 1.5.0.3. And I did upgrade directly from 1.0.x without uninstalling anything.
Ok, but did you try the suggested procedure /without/ deleting
the files that you mention?

Note that attempts to pinpoint and provide workarounds for this issue are currently being added to the MozillaZine Knowledge Base (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Opening_files_using_plugins).
I have again removed Flash using the uninstaller. I did not delete the three files. I have not reinstalled. Just as a test, I went to an .flv file in Windows Explorer, which still had the Firefox logo associated with it. When I open the file, I got the same result ("Open With Firefox" or "Save to Disk"). If you select "open with", it will open a new Firefox tab and give you the same choice box.
Hmm. I could be wrong here, but as I understand it the Macromedia Flash Player plugin does not support FLV files directly; instead they need to be "wrapped" (by the file author) as SWF files. (Macromedia/Adobe's documentation regarding FLV files is somewhat vague in this regard.) All I can say is that I can use my Macromedia Flash Player plugin to view SWF files directly (e.g. by visiting http://millionaire.itv.com/millionaire/game/freegame/anyNormal.swf), but when I try to visit a FLV file (e.g. one of the files at http://www.mediacollege.com/flash/video/tutorial/example-flv.html) I too get the "Opening" dialog box. This is corroborated by the fact that the Shockwave Flash plugin (viewed by typing about:plugins into Firefox's Address Bar) only lists SWF and SPL as its supported suffixes, and not FLV.

Please could you visit the SWF file above and describe what happens. (Your previous post made it sound as if you have not yet reinstalled the Macromedia Flash Player plugin; you will of course need to do that first, else there's no chance of getting Firefox to run your Flash files!)

I'm not sure why your FLV files have the Firefox logo associated with them in Windows Explorer; neither FLV or SWF files have an associated application on my system. Have you got or previously installed any Flash-related software other than browser plugins on your system?
OK, I reinstalled Flash. I had a .swf file already on my hard drive and the "unknown association" icon next to it. I double-clicked, and chose to open with Firefox. It played fine.

So it appears that your flv/swf/spl discussion may be the answer.

The only other Flash-related plug-in I have is Video Downloader, which captures flash videos, among others. Of course, now I have no way to play them.
This bug hasn't had any comments in a while, was against an old version, and was traced to needing to reinstall flash plugin. Closing as invalid, if this is still a problem for anyone in a current release or nightly build, please comment or reopen.
