For the last few days my firefox 1.0.6 hs become non-functional. It loads the first page OK, but then it just sits there saying "connecting to...." and then if I am lucky "connected to..." and it just sits there. If I exit Firefox, there is still a firefox process running in task manager. This started after downloading an update for password maker which it complained about (bad xml). I was unable to see it any more in the tools pop-up to remove it. So I uninstalled Firefox, deleted the chrome and plugins directory and reinstlled. Now I only have 2 plugins (adblock and flashblock) but still cannot do anything with firefox. What has happened? How do I recover? (I need to save my password list and certificates if I make a new profile).

Probably a profile corruption. The most simple solution is deleting everything in your profile except for the most important files like bookmarks.html, cookies.txt, key3.db and signons.txt.

It was my profile. It is bad news when they get corrupted. Is key3.db where my passwords are saved? I tried moving the 3 security files to my new profile, and it caused a hang when I opened the security properties.
