I believe I've seen this reported on NT, but this is real problem for me on
Windows 2000. I'm using Windows 2K 5.00.2195 Service Page 4. After opening and
closing 2 or more Firefox windows Windows keeps one or more copies of Firefox
running as a process. Consequently, if I close all the Firefox windows on my
desktop I cannot restart the application.

In order to clear the problem, I do a CRTL+ALT+DEL to bring up the Task Manager
and find the Firework.exe running on the process tab and kill it. Then it works
fine again.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run 2 or more Firefox windows.
2. Close all Firefox Windows.
3. Attempt to restart with desktop icon.

Expected Results:
Firefox is not removing itself as an active process as do other programs.

This problem was intermittent for a while, but now it is constant.
Summary: Fefox stays in background on Windows 2K → Firefox stays in background on Windows 2K
Sounds like you have a bad extension or theme that's causing this. Do you see
this in safe mode?

I have the same problem with 2K and Firefox 1.5, but in safe mode, it's work fine.
Is there a way to know which extension cause that ?
The frequency of hangups is much less with Firefox 1.5 on W2K. However, it still happens on rare occasion.

Would not be surprised if this was a Microsoft antic.

For example, I'm on the Google AdSense program and I promote the Firefox with Google link and it is supressed when viewing the page with the Opera browser.
willetta, is this still happening with Firefox 2.0.0.14?

This bug was reported on Firefox 2.x or older, which is no longer supported and will not be receiving any more updates. I strongly suggest that you update to Firefox 3.6.3 or later, update your plugins (flash, adobe, etc.), and retest in a new profile. If you still see the issue with the updated Firefox, please post here. Otherwise, please close as RESOLVED > WORKSFORME
