Set the preference 'Automatically check for Updates' to checked and select
automatic download and installation of software and extensions. Now even if the
update is minor, it should downloaded and installed. After finishing, the
message should be extended that the update will be applied when you restart
Firefox. Presently, this is not done 'automatically'. If user selects the
'Check for update' from the Help menu, the update is downloaded and installed
smoothly.
Hari:

The auto-update feature runs about once each day, so I'm betting that you just
need to wait longer before an update will occur. It's possible that there may
not be any available updates for your version of Firefox. You're using a trunk
build, and that will only receive auto update notification when a new release
version is available. Check mozillazine for help if you want to update on the
nightly channel or if you would like to change the interval between autoupdate
checks.
resolving, reopen if you can provide any more specific information. see bug
309784 for more info on the time between auto update checks.
